I located my 1960s/70s Friedland bell transformer and after some internet searches found that it supposedly outputs 8v which is at the very lower end of what the Ring doorbell needs. I then located my equally old doorbell chime which was separate to the transformer.I ordered a used example from Amazon Warehouse but what turned up appeared to be a brand new one to me as the box was still sealed, this made it even better value for money!Installation is straight forward enough providing you know where your doorbell transformer and chime are located and that you have already done some basic wiring before (plug sockets etc.). The biggest hurdle for me was working out which wires in my doorbell chime related to the chime itself. These are the ones I had to find and short circuit using the provided link cable. For me trial and error worked and on my third attempt I found the right combination. Once the power was back on the doorbell sprung into life and set up was completed soon after that.In use the camera is nice and detailed and quickly identifies motion on my driveway. The microphone function is good but I doubt we’ll really use it. Being able to view the camera from our Echo Show, smartphone or internet explorer is a great feature and having it wired in means I don’t ever have to worry about battery life. The Ring app reports that my transformer voltage is at 11v so is in the ‘Good’ bracket.
